Are kids in it for the outcomes or the journey?

Why do kids play sport? For the outcomes or the journey? Kids want to win but is fun/ enjoyment more important? My experience of watching my youngest in two different hockey teams this year suggests to me that team cohesion and communication depends on kids knowing each other and getting along, which happens when they enjoy each others company, i.e. journey not outcomes. Once that's in place, extending team work comes easy.
